Avoiding Side Effects From Laser Hair Removal

Posted May 18, 2010

Despite its price, laser hair removal treatment is ever-growing in popularity. The near-permanent results, and lack of pain associated with the treatments have made it a smash. Before you run to get on line for treatment though, let's take a moment to look at the potential side effects of laser hair removal treatments. These side effects may differ from person to person.

You may experience a redness in the skin near where the laser is applied, lasting a week or even longer. This effect is more common in areas of the body that are sensitive.

Darker skinned patients may get blisters that disappear over the course of two weeks. If this has happened to you, do your best to avoid touching these blisters, as you will be worse off if they pop and leave scars behind.

A shift in skin color (either lighter or darker) may occur near the treatment area. This discoloration can last for months!

If your laser treatment took place near a beauty mark or mole, it may shift color slightly.

These side effects do not occur in all cases and appear to be more common in people with already sensitive skin. One of these situations may also arise if the treatment is being done by someone inexperienced. Let's take a look at some items to consider before going in for treatment to minimize your risk of having a negative side-effect.

Invest the time and do research! Get your hands on any information you can about the procedures involved, the facility that you plan on using, etc. Make sure you are dealing with an experienced medical professional! Provide your treatment clinic with any information you can about your skin type and skin behavior so that they can make the most informed decisions possible pertaining to their usage of laser equipment. If you are having laser treatment done on your upper lip and are concerned about fever blisters forming, speak with your doctor first to get and take an anti-viral medication. Avoid taking any photosynthesizing medications for at least two months before receiving your treatment.

Doing any or all of the above may help you substantially lower the risk of side-effects, making your laser treatment the effective and painless experience that it was intended to be.
