Body Hair Removal 101
Posted Dec 18, 2009
Body hair removal has long been desired for its benefits of beautification and improved hygiene. Technically body hair removal can be classified into two main categories: Depilation and Epilation.
Depilation affects the part of the hair above the surface of the skin. The most common form of depilation is simply shaving the unwanted hair off periodically. This method is obviously not a permanent solution.
Another option is the use of chemical depilatories (creams and lotions). These chemicals work by breaking the disulfide bonds that link the protein chains that give hair its strength, making the hair disintegrate. Nair is an example of a popular depilatory which removes hair but only the hair which resides above the skin layer. nair
Epilation uses physical, chemical, or radiological agents to aid in removal of the entire hair, including the part below the skin. Common examples of epilation include tweezing, waxing and sugaring. Waxing hair can keep unwanted hair away for 2-6 weeks. waxing
Advancements in technology have also led to improved epilation devices which include lasers, threading and intense pulsed light. Modern technology permits advanced Laser hair removal systems.
