The Risks of Laser Hair Removal

For some, laser hair removal is the only technology that they trust for permanent hair removal. They believe that the technology is harmless, and that it is guaranteed to give them the results that they want. Unfortunately, neither of these are true. The technology is not 100 percent effective for all clients, and side-effects may occur after treatment. Understanding the risks behind laser hair removal should help you to understand whether or not this technology is right for your hair removal needs.

Skin Irritation

Laser hair removal uses an actual laser to penetrate the hair and the hair follicles in the skin. Some individuals are going to see issues with this laser in terms of skin irritation. This is not a constant, as some people will see little irritation and others will see more serious irritation. If you have sensitive skin, you should expect some skin irritation after the procedure.

Skin Scarring

Skin scarring is one of the more serious side effects of laser hair removal. While not common, some individuals will see scarring due to the laser penetrating the skin. The laser may cause some blisters and other forms of lacerations that can eventually cause a scar. Again, if you have sensitive skin, this form of hair removal may not be for you.

Pigment Issues

Individuals who have darker skin may see some pigment issues with laser treatment. The lasers attempt to attack the pigment in the hair. The laser may wind up interacting with the pigment in the skin. This can cause some discoloring in the skin that is irreversible. If you have darker skin, speak with a professional about the treatment.
